While there are a bunch of high-end options available for cigar storage, like temperature-controlled humidors and walk-in cigar rooms (the dream), these can be quite expensive…and so maybe not feasible for every smoker But, there is an affordable and practical option for cigar storage that seems to be gaining more popularity among cigar enthusiasts: The cigar jar humidor.

What Exactly Is a Cigar Jar Humidor?

A cigar jar humidor is essentially a glass jar with a sealed lid that is designed to hold cigars while maintaining an ideal level of humidity. A good cigar jar humidor is made from high-quality glass or acrylic that is airtight and should feature a rubber seal around the lid to keep in moisture. Jars can come in various sizes, ranging from small enough to hold just a few cigars to large enough to hold a dozen or more, depending on the size of cigars you have.

Our favorite cigar jar humidor comes fully equipped with a humidification system hidden inside, is made of a sturdy acrylic, and holds up to 25 cigars.

How Does a Cigar Jar Humidor Work?

Cigars are a luxury enjoyed by people all over the world, and like any luxury item, they require proper care and storage to maintain a cigar’s quality and flavor. One of the most important factors in cigar storage is humidity control. Cigars require a stable environment with a specific level of humidity (between 65% and 72%) to stay fresh and prevent them from drying out. Using a sealed jar as a humidor helps keep cigars from drying out but also prevents excess moisture from getting in.

What Are the Benefits of Cigar Jar Humidors?

  1. Affordability. They are significantly less expensive than traditional humidors. This means more money for those special cigars you’ve been eyeing!
  2. You get to carry on an old Cuban tradition, and that’s badass. Back in the early 1900s, the first glass cigar jar was introduced in Havana. This was a big deal, considering how humid it is there. No more soggy cigars.
  3. Cigar jar humidors require minimal setup and maintenance. They typically come with a humidification device, so you don’t really have to think twice about it. The humidification system is designed to maintain a constant level of humidity inside the jar. This can be easily replaced when it dries out, which is typically every few months, depending on the size of the jar and the number of cigars being stored.
  4. Another benefit of cigar jar humidors is their transparency. The clear glass allows you to see the cigars inside and check on their condition without having to disturb the humidity by opening the lid every time you want to take a peek.

Cigar Jars vs. Cigar Boxes

There are a few key differences to consider when storing cigars in a jar vs. a box.

Cigar Jars

Material. Cigar jars are usually made of glass, acrylic, or crystal.

Seal. The best jars will come with airtight seals to maintain the freshness of cigars. If the cigars are exposed to too much air, they could dry out, and when that happens, the tobacco leaves burn fast and hot–not a great smoking experience if you ask us.

Capacity. Quality jars hold up to 25 cigars comfortably.

Display. Cigar jars look pretty cool on display. Plus, it’s satisfying to be able to see your collection and think about which one you’ll be smoking next.

Portability. Cigar jars are easy to take to a family gathering or a friend’s retirement party. You can trust the lid won’t pop open on the way and there’s no corners to worry about if you’re carrying it in a bag.

Cigar Boxes

Material. Cigar boxes can be made of a variety of materials, including wood, metal, and glass. Spanish cedar is the type of wood you’ll see used most often, especially for the inside of the box.

Seal. Most of the time, but not always, cigar boxes have a seal or latch to keep the cigars fresh.

Capacity. Certain cigar boxes can hold larger quantities of cigars compared to cigar jars. Typically when you buy a box of cigars, it comes with 20-25 cigars.

Variety. There are many different types of cigar box available. Some of them even come with built-in drawers so you can separate them by size, brand, or flavor profile. Some boxes can store 50+ cigars.

Portability. Cigar boxes aren’t a problem to go back and forth with–they may be lighter than a jar, depending on the size.

In the end, the choice between a cigar jar or cigar box comes down to what you like and the number of cigars you’re looking to keep freshly stored.
