Review Summary: Camacho Broadleaf Cigar

Introduction: The Camacho Broadleaf cigar has been highly anticipated due to Camacho’s reputation for bold flavors and the robust nature of broadleaf tobacco. Unlike the typical Pennsylvania broadleaf, this cigar features a Honduran broadleaf wrapper, with binders and fillers from Honduras and the Dominican Republic.

Initial Impressions:

  • Appearance: The cigar boasts a toothy wrapper with a striking copper band featuring Camacho’s iconic scorpion logo. The design is bold, mirroring the expected flavor profile.
  • Initial Flavor: On the first light, there’s an immediate burst of earthy, chocolatey, and caramel notes. A bitter chocolate flavor is also prominent, accompanied by a peppery retrohale.

Smoking Experience:

  • First Third: Both reviewers noted issues with the draw, describing it as tight and resulting in light, wispy smoke. This hindered the full experience of the cigar’s flavors, though hints of leather, earthiness, and a bit of creaminess were present. The burn was problematic, with instances of canoeing and tunneling, despite the cigar’s seemingly good construction.
  • Second Third: The cigar improved, with a better draw and increased smoke production. The flavors included pepper, creaminess, wood (possibly cedar), and leather. The peppery retrohale remained strong, making it difficult for one reviewer to enjoy retrohaling. Despite these challenges, the overall experience became more enjoyable as the cigar opened up.
  • Final Third: The flavor shifted predominantly to leather and pepper. While James continued to face burn issues, Kelley found the burn had corrected itself. The cigar was described as a “pepper bomb,” overshadowing the expected bold, dark chocolate notes typical of broadleaf cigars.

Overall Evaluation:

  • Strength and Body: The Camacho Broadleaf was medium to medium-full in body, contrary to expectations of a full-bodied, bold broadleaf experience.
  • Flavor Profile: Predominantly earthy, creamy, woody, and very peppery, with less emphasis on the expected sweet and dark chocolate flavors.
  • Burn and Draw: Inconsistent, with notable issues in the first and final thirds. The second third showed improvement, but the experience was marred by frequent burn corrections and tight draws.

Scores:

  • James: Mid-80s
  • Kelley: 82

Conclusion: The Camacho Broadleaf offers a unique take on broadleaf cigars with its Honduran wrapper and distinctive flavor profile. While it provides an enjoyable smoke with prominent peppery notes, the construction issues detract from the experience. At an MSRP of $9.75 to $10, it represents a fair value but might not meet the expectations of those seeking a more robust, traditional broadleaf experience.
